I spent a fantastic New Year's Eve on Red Square this year, and wanted to pass on this link to the "Alpha" hotel where I stayed. It was clean and comfortable, and for only $35 per night, maybe the best hotel bargain in Moscow. I would definitely stay there again.
The hotel is only 5 or 6 stops from Red Square, and sits directly on the blue metro line; We're talking 30 seconds from the metro exit to the hotel's front door. They also have an internet cafe' in the main lobby and several good restaurants as well.
And...the best part: they do *not* require a credit card or pre-payment for reservations. You can reserve a room on-line and pay when you arrive, which is exactly what I did. They also arrange visa-support, (if requested) which might come in handy for someone who's just coming to Moscow for a week or 2 to "check things out" and visit some schools.
On this page, you will also find a map of the Moscow metro, which you can enlarge and print out.
OK, here's the link: www.hotels-moscow.ru/Alfa.html

PS: Even the cheapest rooms here for $35 have a private bathroom, small color TV (with BBC news!) and a mini-fridge (which is empty when you arrive)
